Sydney 9am on channel 9 had some great TV yesterday. A regular show called
Bush Beat featured captive breeding programmes of
Australian natives.
This was followed by a terrific show on the fight to save the Glossy
Black-Cockatoo on Kangaroo Island, featuring Stephen
Garnett, his wife and team of helpers. The film was superb as they showed the
artificial nest boxes, one having a camera
within and showing the hatching and growth of Santa, a chick. Mum Claudia fed
the chick with regurgitated foods from her
bill and the gentleness with which she did this was heart-warming, considering
the size difference between Mum and chick.
Santa was such a cutie! And cameras were soooo close to adults, showing their
beautiful plumage. The film showed
destruction of an egg by a possum as it entered a cockatoo's nest in a natural
tree hole (may have been accidental damage as
it investigated the hole). The show also discussed their food source and was
all round very educational and visually
unbelievable.
