Since the count for pelicans is so low, and pelicans are so large, I imagine
at least one of the strikes caused a total write-off (i.e. crash) of a very
expensive
plane.
Amazing how much damage some little Cliff Swallows can do! Also amazing how
well
they can pin down the species of a bird after it collides with a plane.

I saw this item floating about and managed to download a copy from a google
cache.
Basically, it purports to document the cost of wildlife strikes [by
species] for
the US Airforce, listed in total cost order [I don't know what the
timescale for
this data set is].
Assuming the list has a factual basis, the pelican would be the most
dangerous
bird, with the average collision costing US$43 million, ten times the next
most
dangerous [griffons]. The most commonly struck bird is the 'horned lark',
but
being a much smaller bird, the average cost is a mere US$2600 per strike.
Our friend the laughing gull appears to have been involved in a few prangs
[43]
which cost an average of US$6300.
The humourous element in the list is the suggestion that pigs might fly ...
