Stuart
Gibson's Albatross is a medium sized member of the Wandering Albatross
species group. The known population (approx. 10 000 pairs) breeds entirely
in the Auckland Island Group, NZ; on Adams (95%), Disappointment (4%) and
Auckland (1%) Islands.
About 85% of the Diomedea that occur off the NSW coast are Gibson's
Albatross.
Robertson and Warham first described the 2 NZ taxa of Diomedea in 1992.
[Bull. Brit. Ornithoil. Club, 1992, 112, 74-81.]
The origin of the name Antipodean Albatross is self-apparent. The name
Gibson's Albatross was given to honour the pioneering work of Doug Gibson
and his colleagues in the NSW Albatross Study Group (now part of SOSSA) who
contributed much to the early knowledge of these 2 taxa.
