g'day all,
The Birds Queensland Web Page http://birdsqueensland.org.au/
has been updated once again by Web Master Tim Murphy.
The Gazetteer now includes detailed directions to
-- Chinaman's Creek Reservoir, Cloncurry
-- Cloncurry Sewage Treatment Plant and Ponds
-- Clem Walton Park and Lake Corella
-- Lake Moondarra, Mt Isa (Wide Bay on the Western side of the Lake)
-- Mica Creek Dusky Grasswren site
-- Mount Isa Sewage Ponds
-- Georgina River, Camooweal
I hope to have several more locations added, including the popular McNamara's
Road
Carpentarian Grasswren site before the rush of "Mexicans" pass through the area
this
tourist season.
(McNamara's Rd is often incorrectly called Lady Loretta Mine Rd by birdwatchers
.. The
Lady Loretta Project Road is a private road leading from Lady Annie to an
exploration
site, many miles away.)
GRASSWRENS
I again encourage visitors to look for other locations of the Grasswrens rather
than just
"follow the leader"
The Carpentarian Gw have been sighted at several places along the road to
Camooweal
including
-- The Gunpowder (Mount Gordon mine) turnoff
-- along McNamara's Rd (south and north of the well known site
-- the turnoff to Burketown (2/3 of the way to Camooweal)
-- the turnoff to Microwave tower (40km east of Camooweal)
It has also been recorded 80km north of Camooweal on the Normanton Road.
All locations have bare ungrassed ground between the clumps of spinifex.
The CGw like to walk, run & hop unhindered from one clump to the next. The
pairs maintain
contact with a single high pitched call.
The Dusky Gw more often sticks to the sides of rocky, spinifex covered hills
... and will
sometimes fly/jump from one clump of spinifex to the next. When flushed they
tend to move
uphill.
Both species survive on the (mainly) insects they find under the spinifex.
They, like many
other birds, do not require a water supply
Regards, Bob Forsyth, Mount Isa, NW Qld.
