< Ludicrous close season >
by Keith Youngs, Tonbridge,Kent, UK.

March 25 marked the start of the shooting season. Whoever is responsible for
determining the dates for close and open season is either completely unaware of
what he is doing or is getting away with fooling a large number of people.

From March 25 a licence is being given to shoot at only protected birds! One
can
only find marsh harriers, owls, herons, hoopoes, bee-eaters, swifts and swallows
until the turtle doves and quails start arriving mid-April. Every shot heard
between March 25 and mid-April simply means a protected bird has been shot!

I urge the authorities to stop this senseless fooling around and get down to
some serious business if they truly want to offer protection to protected and endangered species. It does not require much knowledge to become aware that the turtle dove and quail season is between April 15 and May 10. They make a short
appearance again for one week in early September.

Thrushes arrive mid-October but I don't agree that these beautiful songbirds, together with skylarks, should be shot, but that is another matter! Woodcocks arrive in late November to early December. The ridiculous "sport" of shooting at
exhausted birds from the sea should be banned immediately.

Somebody in power must take steps to show he means business.
