I had a couple of birding trips on the weekend.. the first was to
Greenfields Wetlands which had quite a few birds, despite being a little low
on water. I saw 30 species in about 45 minutes. The highlights were Banded
and Black-winged Stilts, Aust Spotted Crake and Yellow Billed Spoonbill.
And three species that let me get much closer than I usually get -
Shoveller, Little Grassbird and Red Necked Stint. There were 23 stints
including two with Orange leg flags.
On Sunday Philip Griffin and I went down to the Tolderol Game Reserve. We
were hoping to find Lewin's rail but dipped on that unfortunately.
The list for Tolderol was 57 species
Shoveller, Grey Teal, Chestnut Teal, Shelduck, Black Winged Stilt, Hoary
Headed Grebe, Swamp Harrier, Black Swan, Crested Pigeon, Magpie, Black
tailed Native Hen, White Fronted Chat, Purple Swamphen, Red Necked Stint,
Whiskered Tern, Pacific Black Duck, Spotted Crake, Little Grassbird,
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Orange Chat, White Ibis, Straw Necked Ibis, Masked
Lapwing, Little Pied Cormorant, Starling, Welcome Swallow, Black Tailed
Godwit, Pelican, Golden Headed Cisticola, Caspian Tern, Red Necked Avocet,
Banded Stilt, White Winged Black Tern, Red Kneed Dotterel, Crested Tern,
White Faced Heron, Great Egret, Yellow Billed Spoonbill, Common Greenshank,
Magpie Lark, Curlew Sandpiper, Great Cormorant, Silver Gull, Marsh
Sandpiper, Red Capped PLover, Aust Grebe, Kestrel, Skylark, Richard's Pipit,
Singing Honeyeater, Willy Wagtail, New Holland Honeyeater, Pied Cormorant,
Darter, Great Crested Grebe, Coot, House Sparrow.
We also saw lots of Neophemas which never gave us a chance to identify them.
We also had a walk around Scott Conservation Park on the way home.. yielding
another 24 species as well as another dozen while we were driving along..
giving us 93 species for the day.
