OUCH!
Today at Ricketts Point there were at least 45 Common Terns
- no fairys, no white-fronts... and I now have doubts about
those records because these birds looked quite small to me
(as compared with Crested Terns) when white-fronts look
(from my memories) relatively much larger.
Anyhow the i/d was by Mike Carter who readily convinced
Charles Smith and me when we got close enough (and wet
enough feet) for a good look.
Mike said the birds had a lot of fresh plumage and it would
not be long before their black caps were complete.
Given the weather forecast they may well be there again for
the next few days. There are spring tides at present so
avoid high tide when I guess the birds are likely to have
gone. High tide today was at 10am but there were still
extensive areas of reef out of the water at 1400.
