Subject: Timboon birds (Vict.)
Just returned from a week with the family at Curdievale, just west of Timboon in
western Victoria.
The area has patches of forest left after substantial clearing in the past, but
there are still a few interesting species about if you seek out the habitat.
Highlights for the week were:
- white phase of the Grey Goshawk. A truely spectacular raptor. Saw the same
individual twice, once on the aerial of the Boggy Creek Pub on the Curdies
River, Curdievale and again flying into forest ner the same spot a day later.
- a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles at eye level in a large Manna Gum next to the
road just west of Timboon township.
- Rufous Bristlebird on the cliff walk at Port Cambell. This is dense low
coastal heathland. An individual ran out from the side of the track and I
instantly recognised it from this behaviour alone.
- a banded Hooded Plover at Crofts Bay near Loch Ard Gorge.
- a few Cape Barren Geese and about 90 Magpie Geese at Lake Elingamite, a
crater lake near Cobden.
The area is well worth a visit for birding as I didn't actually go out any day
specifically to seek out birdlife.
