Dr. Tarburton enquired on 19th March about needletail sightings in
Tasmania. On Flinders Island, in Bass Strait, on 16th March, my wife
Margaret and I saw these birds, in number less than 10. The weather was
very windy, cloudy and cool. On King Island, again in Bass Strait,
on 24th March, we saw 3 needletails. The weather was warm and sunny,
with no wind.
On the latter island, in Lavinia Nature Reserve, a
Ramsar site, we searched on 6 days for Orange-bellied parrots, which
are said to stop there on their way to southern Australia. We saw none,
which, considering the area of saltwater swamp, and the number of
parrots, was not surprising.
