Hi all
Spent Friday morning birding on a property
just out of Wollombi , 30kms south of Cessnock, NSW. Yengo National Park not far
away. The sun was not sighted and about 2.30 P.M. the skies opened up and
put an end to any further birding. At least it was raining at home too as we
really needed it and I would not have been happy to be rained out where I was
and miss a fine day at home.
The day started well with a handsome male Spotted
Quailthrush close to our cottage. I flushed it before I saw it and then followed
it to its landing site and watched it for some time poking around the leaf
litter with a couple of Speckled Warblers. Plenty of Jacky Winters hawking for
insects. Superb Lyrebirds were calling and I caught a quick glimpse of one.
Three Wonga Pigeons feeding on the ground were nice to see. The trees along
Wollombi Brook yielded Yellow and Brown Thornbills with Striated seen further up
the hill.
White throated Treecreepers and Rufous Whistlers
were plentiful and a lone Leaden Flycatcher.
White browed Scrubwrens and Superb Fairy Wrens were
also fairly common. A pair of Glossy Black Cockatoos gave a nice fly by and
around 30 King Parrots in the one flock made plenty of noise.
Honeyeaters seen included : Lewins, Yellow faced ,
Yellow Tufted , White eared. Only one raptor, a Black shouldered Kite being
harassed by 3 Magpies. A walk up the hill in search of Rock Warblers was
immediately successful with a pair being found within seconds of me entering
suitable habitat. I watched them for about 15 minutes as they poked into
crevices and ran over rocks. One got quite bold and came and sat 2 metres behind
me ( it knew I was trying to film it of course and by the time I turned
around , it was off ). Also seen in this area were Yellow Robins, Large
billed Scrubwren, Red browed Finches and Golden Whistler . Around 50 species seen before rain interrupted
play.
Have had to come home to work today and tomorrow
and will return Sunday afternoon and spend Monday, hopefully with finer weather
to find a few more birds.
