Hi Birders,
Alan Rogers and Tim Kenny had a successful trip to
Old Bar yesterday, 28 March 2002. They arrived just on high tide about 10.30 am
and no sooner did they reach the Little Tern fenced area on the beach at Old
Bar, and commenced the walk up the beach when they found a large group of birds
roosting above the high tide line, amongst them was the Kentish Plover. Good
views were obtained! They were so pleased having dipped on a previous occasion.
They later walked up along the fence to the now famous pink cup where there were
another group of birds on the edge of the tide line, but there was nothing
special amongst them.
The tide was a 1.9m high tide which covered all the
sandbars of Farquhar inlet so there was a good concentration of waders and
twerns on the beach, including 8 Pied Oystercatchers and some Gull-billed Terns,
plenty of waders in breeding plumage but no Sanderlings.. The sighting is good
news for people heading north this weekend. The bad news is that the Ruff and
Yellow Wagtails have not been seen now at Ash Island for nearly 3
weeks.
