I was over in the Capertee Valley last Thursday. While birding time was
limited what time I had was spent looking for Regent Honeyeaters (always
elusive at this time of year).

One surprise I had was hearing a Painted Honeyeater. There are few
records of Painteds in the valley at this time of year. They are far more
common up to about late December. I had excellent views of this bird
about 3 metres away as it came in to my squeaking.

Regent Honeyeaters were located at three places on the Glen Alice -
Rylstone Road. Of interest was that the birds fronting 2805 Glen Alice
Road (Timothy and Lynda - this must be the best purchase you have aver
made!) the Regents were extremely vocal. If you weren't aware of the date
you would have thought it was spring. The birds were behaving exactly as
they do when establishing breeding territories. I actually wondered if we
had some unseasonal breeding in response to the prolific flowering of Box
Mistletoe. The next day was much cooler (a cool change having passed
through overnight) and the Regents were silent.

Timothy - can you let me know how many birds you think you have there. I
only looked along the road - other birds were calling on the hill.

Cheers
