I've seen a few pairs of beach thickknees, but haven't heard them wailing at
night. I did hear some wailing one night at Bulwer [Moreton Is], but couldn't
tell if the call was from beach or bush thickknees.
I have heard beach thickknees call when alarmed [I've flushed the odd one] and
that was rather subdued compared to the loud and rich harmonics coming from a
flock of bush thickknees. [a bit like the difference between a glossy black and
a yellow/white tailed black cockatoo].
For what it is worth, bush thickknees will hiss when approached while nesting.
