Hi All,
Yesterday I went on quite a journey of discovery, because I made the mistake
of assuming that everything you read in HANZAB is like The Word Of God. I
did a lot of sifting through my mental archive, and all the field guides,
until I realised the error was in HANZAB itself, and I was not going crazy.
If you own or have access to HANZAB, you might like to make a note of this.
In volume 3, plate number 44, opposite page 705, shows the White-winged
Black Tern and the Black Tern reversed. Examples 5, 6 and 7 are actually
Black Terns, and examples 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12 are White-winged Black Tern.
Whilst I have no personal knowledge of the Black Tern, I am acquainted with
the White-winged Black.
It is just a compilation error, but one which would lead an observer to make
an incorrect identification.
Before I acknowledged the error to myself, I had begun to wonder if I had
been misreporting Black Terns as White-winged Blacks!
Cheers,
Jill
