How is a birder supposed to get any work done with so many distractions?
For at least the last four hours, an increasing number of White-throated
Needletails have been flying around my place below treetop level - so low
that you can hear the 'whoosh' of their sickle wings cutting through the
air. As my house is on a hillside near the top of a ridge, this puts them
at eye level when I look out the window. They are moving very definitely
northwards. Flying amongst them at one stage was a Collared Sparrowhawk,
which didn't hang around for long, then a flock of 21 Yellow-tailed
Black-Cockatoos flew over. Smaller groups of YTBCs are flying past,
seemingly every few minutes. Gang-gangs have just returned to my street
after being very hard to find for the last few months. A travelling
Mistletoebird could be heard and although the honeyeater migration is not
yet in full swing, the occasional flock of Yellow-faced goes by, as do
small flocks of Spotted Pardalotes. The Wonga Pigeon gives an occasional
burst of calling, Grey Fantails are darting in an out of the trees and the
resident Brown Thornbills are adeptly ridding my garden of small pests.
