When I was driving from Victoria to Townsville two weeks ago, I didn't
have a lot of time for birding. However, a sign saying "Bird Hide" on
the Newell Highway 5 Km south of Forbes attracted my attention. The
sign pointed to Gum Swamp, just west of the Highway, where I counted at
least 10 Freckled Ducks among the Pink-eared and other species of
ducks. There were probably more, as I didn't search very thoroughly.
There was also a male Blue-billed Duck. That was on the 28 Feb.
Pleasant interlude on a long drive.
