Proact is expanding its efforts to run a semi-permanent campaign to take
effective and consistent action against the trade in wild-caught birds
worldwide. This will be run under the signet of "Keep Birds Free" and
has a project team of Proact members led by Ian Hinze, UK

All campaigns need to start somewhere. The chosen area of operations for
the first stage in this fight against a worldwide problem is Uganda -
which has just given the green light to the trapping and exporting of
thousands of wild birds and other animals - some extremely rare and
endangered. Many of the birds and animals involved are not native to
Uganda ,for example Verreaux's Eagle (Aquila verreauxii); the vulnerable
populations of other countries in Africa are being pillaged so that
these species can be sold 'legally' in the Ugandan 'marketplace', where
controls are lax and the lawgivers tolerant. We in Europe, where many of
the species end up - dead or barely alive - have been asked to help.
This evil and ruinous trade must be stopped.

Join the opening shots of the campaign at <
http://keepbirdsfree.tripod.com/eastafrica/id11.html There will be a
lot more to come - and soon a chance for you to make your voice heard.

WE have chosen 'Keep Birds Free' as an appropriate campaign name for a
FULL Proact partner. We await your support in  this, the start of a long
battle to save the world's birds and their habitats from those elements
of society who are always to sell OUR planetary birthright in exchange
for THEIR short-term and selfish profit.
