Rufous Owl in my backyard!

I've just moved to Townsville from Queenscliff, Victoria. I arrived last Saturday and have been house-hunting since Monday. Yesterday, I found a great birders' residence on 3 acres about 15K out of Townsville. There is a dam on the property and a rain-foresty creek on the boundary.

When I viewed it yesterday, I saw a Blue-winged Kookaburra and a Dollarbird on the property and Magpie Geese next door. Naturally, I rented the house on the spot.

I picked up the keys today and went out with a friend from work to have another look (I'm still waiting for my furniture to arrive). We disturbed a Rufous Owl which flew up into a tree near the creek and glared at us balefully. I rushed off to get the bins and it was still there when I got back. Then I went to get the camera and scope from the car but it moved to another tree where I couldn't photograph it. It didn't seem in any hurry to leave, so I hope I'll get another chance. I'll keep you posted.

Ian
