Hi all,
I'm heading into the field around the 22-23 March for four weeks to search
for and monitor the five Black-eared Miner colonies that have been
translocated to Victoria from SA over the past two years.
I'm looking for two volunteers to join me for some or all of the time that
I'm in the field. For the majority of the time I will be based in the Murray
Sunset National Park (Vic) but depending on our success rate there I may
make a quick visit to Gluepot Reserve (SA).
To search for the miners we usually walk between 6 and 14 km per day,
playing recordings of miners at regular intervals. Ideal volunteers would be
reasonably fit, have experience walking in the bush OFF TRACKS, be familiar
with navigating with both a GPS unit AND a compass and have some birding
experience.
Autumn in the mallee is typified by mild daytime temperatures and calm
conditions (Usually!!!) making for very pleasant field work. On the grids
around our Black-eared Miner release sites we regularly record many of the
other mallee specialists (Mallee fowl, M. Emuwren, Striated Grasswren etc)
so even if we don't see Black-eared Miners every day there's always
something of interest about.
We can provide each person with an EPIRB and a GPS and will ensure walkers
are competent in their use before turning them loose. We also have a
satellite phone at base camp. As we are based at a fairly remote site
camping is necessary for the entire period. As is usual for our long staying
volunteers (a week or more) food will be provided. If Melbourne based and
available to join me around the 22-23 March I can provide a lift up there
and all transport while in and around the park. Similarly I'll have spare
seats in a car heading back to Melbourne in mid-April.
