"The wattle" actually amounts to squillions of
species (approximately)! The venerable Blackwood (Acacia
melanoxylon) of SE wet forests is, for example, most
definitely a tree ;-)
Even if not strictly official, I think the
"green and gold" signifying Australia in various contexts is a reference to the
wattle(s). Go with Acacia and you can hardly go
too far wrong .......
