G'day everyone,

Whilst riding to work yesterday morning I noticed a
Darter perched on an old wharf pylon. It was next to
the Charles Grimes Bridge which crosses the Yarra
River about 1.5 km downstream from Flinders Street
Station, Melbourne. I stopped for a closer look and
discovered that it had a red plastic ring around the
base of its neck, the type that remains on a yogurt or
cream bottle after the tamper proof top is removed.
The neck didn't seem disfigured nor did the bird seem
to be in any discomfort but I did wonder if the ring
would prevent it from swallowing larger fish. I saw a
Darter in the same spot about a fortnight ago, but
didn't notice any ring. I'll keep a lookout for this
striking looking creature in the future and hopefully
see no deterioration in its condition.
