For those who are interested, the Painted Snipe breeding area on Hope Island
will probably be saved. A meeting will be held on site on Thursday morning.
This meeting will include officers from three different areas of council
(environment, animal control and parks), reps from Energex (owners of land),
National Parks, and the School of Environmental Studies at Griffith
University (Gold Coast Campus) as well as Denise Brown and myself. An
interested local resident who has been observing the birds for some time
will also be there.

I only hope it is not too late. The recent sightings of the young MAY
indicate a reduction in their numbers. I hope they were only hiding. A
Black Duck had a brood of eight but only three remain. A fox has been seen
in the area with birds (ducks at the moment) in its mouth. There is nothing
I can do about it before Thursday. I have spoken to the animal control
people but their hands are tied until a decision is made on the preservation
of the site.

Pectoral Sandpipers at the site are an added bonus. The species list for
the ("miserable swamp that was little better than a flooded ditch" in the
words of Sean Dooley) is now around the 70 mark in under three weeks.
