I agree entirely with Scott. There is a grave risk that inquiries and
debates about the best techniques and what is acceptible in the way of
control will drag on while the foxes move further afield and increase their
numbers. The loss of a few devils and even quolls in a healthy population
is as nothing compared to the devastation that foxes will cause in Tasmania.
We on the land are very worried that there may be a push to ban 1080 and
therefore foxoff. It is our only effective tool to reduce fox populations
and give some hope to brolgas, bush stone curlews and even masked lapwings
in this partof the world - as well as a lot of other species, particularly
lizards, the impact on which we can't begin to measure.
There is no room here for protest about the loss of a few animals, much as
we may hate the thought of non-target animals being killed.
Writing to Dr Kemp is a very good idea - Tasmania needs help and support.
