G'day all,

I notice that interest in Tasmanian foxes has died out quickly on this
mailing list.
This is one of the most important conservation issues we are faced with.
A detailed easily available source of informantion is the transcript of an
interview with Peter Mooney, head of the Tamanian Fox Task Force, broadcast
on Earthbeat on 24/11/01, and available at
http://www.abc.net.au/rn/science/earth/stories/s429346.htm
Further information can be found on the Tamanian Fox Task Force website at
http://www.dpiwe.tas.gov.au/inter.nsf/WebPages/SJON-56P2RG?open

As far as I can find only two foxes have been shot, both by private hunters.
There have been a number of sightings.
The Australian of 16/02/02 quoted Professor Short of Melbourne University as
saying,". it's going to require more money and resources than Tasmanians can
afford".

In other words it is going to need Federal support.
Getting rid of these foxes will be very expensive, but far cheaper than the
long-term cost of intervening to save the species that will become
endangered if the foxes become established.

Once again I urge all birding-aus'ers to write to the Minister of
Environment asking for urging Federal support for the Tasmanians. The
address is

The Hon Dr David Kemp

Minister for Environment

368 Centre Road Bentleigh

Vic 3204

Write to your local Federal MP as well. If you care about conservation do
this now. Politicians my have a limited grasp of environmental issues but
they can count the letters in their mail boxes. If you don't know what to
say email me and I will send you a draft.

Regards

Robert Read
