I know John Gamblin has mentioned the upcoming Ballarat event but I'd really
like (ok, I'd probably love it) to get a
birding-aus contingent along.
No hard slogging across wetlands, just a pleasurable stroll in a parade.
Ballarat is a pretty area, I was there just on the weekend. I'm sure they'd
be lots of worthwhile birding areas to duck (excuse the pun) into around the
area while you are there. You fellows (and girls) travel all sorts of
distances to spot a bird - how about doing the same to support a worthwhile
cause, being all the birds you so enjoy watching.
This is the info I have also just received;
"This year the Coalition Against Duck Shooting will have an entry in the
Ballarat Begonia Festival street parade. It will not be a protest, but
rather a celebration of 17 years of duck rescue and saved birds. We
desperately need people to march with us. Just wear brightly coloured
clothing and a baseball hat. The parade will be held on Monday March 11
(Labour Day holiday) and we will need to queue up at 11.30 for a 12.30
start. If you can help please contact Lynn on or phone
0414816509."
I perhaps should mention, in case any are curious, the requested attire is
general rescue wear. The bright colours are so we stand out on the wetland
and can be easily seen, by both fellow rescuers and hopefully duck shooters.
We also stand out from the shooters as they're all in camouflage gear. The
baseball hat is protection for our eyes when the shot pellets are sometimes
falling down on our heads. (Yes, silly me thought it had just started to
rain the first time it happened!!) There is no requirement for you to have
had rescued to take part in the parade, any supportive people would be
especially welcomed.
I hope to see you there.
Many thanks,
Karen Pearson.
