I returned two weeks ago from a work trip through Bougainville, the
Bismarcks and Manus Island and managed to fit in the odd spot of birding
with highlights, focusing on endemics for those areas, as follows:

Buka Island, the road into the interior - Bougainville Crow, Yellow-throated
White-eye, Bougainville Monarch, Scarlet-naped Myzomela, Solomon Sea-Eagle

Bougainville, around Arawa, where Don and Llane Hadden were my kind hosts -
Woodford's Rail (8 different birds), and on Anusagaro Island offshore -
Nicobar Pigeon (30+), Black-tailed Whistler

New Britain, forest patches near the villages of Gaulim and Tomaringa, near
Rabaul - Pied Coucal, Ashy Myzomela, Black-bellied Myzomela, Bismarck
Flowerpecker, New Britain Sparrowhawk, New Britain Friarbird, Blue-eyed
Cockatoo, Bismarck Imperial-Pigeon

Lihir Island - Bronze Ground-Dove

New Ireland, mainly a swamp forest patch 20km south of Kavieng, along a road
to the right just over a well-marked bridge - Mottled Mannikin,
Buff-bellied Mannikin, Black-tailed Monarch, Dull Flycatcher, Purple-bellied
Lory, Violaceous Coucal, Pied Cuckoo-Dove, YELLOW-LEGGED PIGEON (its little
known call - an explosive, barking ?coo?, a jumble of one or two-syllabled
notes repeated in quick succession over several minutes), Ribbon-tailed
Drongo

Manus Island, mainly around Rossun village - Superb Pitta, Black-headed
White-eye, Admiralty Pied Monarch, and on Hawei Island offshore - Bismarck
Black Myzomela.

Also of interest were 20 black-headed gulls, all winter plumage, mostly
first-year, off Lorengau on Manus Island, and pectoral sandpipers at the
airports at Manus and Namatani, New Ireland, where a swinhoe's snipe was
also present.
