Last week Timothy Hyde informed me that Regent Honeyeaters had again
return to his property in the Capertee Valley (more or less between Mudgee
and Lithgow NSW).
At this time of year Regents are difficult to find and, when located, are
often only in pairs or small parties feeding on flowering mistletoe. This
was exactly the case on Timothy and Lynda's place.
I had cause to be in the valley last Friday and had a quick look. As
indicated the Regents were there. Only two seen at any one time but
possibly as many as five present.
I strongly suggest that anyone birding in the Capertee Valley over the
next month spend some time searching flowering mistletoe (there's lots of
it along the roads). Regents have been found throughout the valley
feeding on mistletoe in past years so there is really no need to
concentrate around Timothy's place. I would love to hear what you find.
Records at this time of year are really important in trying to sort out
the movement patterns of these enigmatic birds.
