Subject: Red-necked Pharlarope (Vic.)
Russell Woodford asks about records of the red-necked
Pharlarope in Victoria.
I've just examined the Atlas of Victoria Wildlife
mapping program for the species and it shows there to
be 30 records for the state, most of these are from
the western shores of Port Phillip Bay between Geelong
and Melbourne with a few from the Lake Connewarre area
south of Geelong.
There are also some old records from far northern
Victoria around Swan Hill and the Kerang Lakes.
Emison et al. (1987) in the 'Atlas of Victorian Birds'
note that the few Victorian records have been of
single birds on lakes and sewage lagoons on the
Bellarine Peninsula...' and lakes near Kerang.
