Hello All,
Leeton Sewage Works is currently playing host to large numbers of ducks
including no less than 92 Freckled Ducks. I say no less because there are
two ponds and I counted on one pond before unintentionally pushing the
ducks on the other pond onto the one that I had just counted from! I didn't
feel like starting again! I suspect that most of the Freckled Ducks were on
the first pond however. Other ducks present included Blue-billed Ducks,
Aust. Shoveler, Grey Teal, Chestnut Teal, Black Duck, Hardhead and
Pink-eared Duck. A lone Latham's Snipe was flushed out of the channel also.
In the Fivebough wetland I spent a pleasant few hours watching Spotted and
Spotless Crakes although they succeeded in frustrating my photographic
efforts! There was quite a bit of vocal activity from the Spotless Crakes
suggesting that there were many more birds there than I saw. Elsewhere on
the rail front Black-tailed Native-hens are still prevalent being at
Fivebough, the above-mentioned sewage works and at Lake Wyangan.
Painted Honeyeaters are still present in Binya SF although they are far
less obvious than they were a month or so ago- whether this is because they
are calling less or many have moved on I'm not sure. I got very close
extended views of an immature Painted which still had some of the gape
markings.
All the above places are near Griffith in central west NSW.
Cheers
Mick Todd
