Sean Dooley related his experience on Flinders and King Islands in regards
differing attitudes to his birdwatching.

A negative, or hostile, response is not very pleasant and can often (as it
obviously did with Sean) influence your own attitudes about a place. Quite
understandable really.

I have heard of birdwatchers being "confronted" while birding in the
Capertee Valley. This, however, is generally not the case with the
majority of locals in the valley either welcoming birdwatchers or are more
ambivalent in regards this "invasion". Like everywhere there are those
that, for reasons only known to themselves, see birders (possibly because
they see them as being "ratbag greenies") or other outsiders as a threat
and react negatively. It's a pity that people react this way. While it's
a negative experience it's just as likely (perhaps more likely) that the
next birder to Flinders Island or the Capertee Valley or wherever will run
into a friendly and more helpful local.

The best way to deal with this is to perhaps just move on and don't worry
about it.

Cheers
