VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

LIVERPOOL PLAINS SURVEY PROGRAM 2002

A Birds Australia project funded by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) and the Threatened Species Network (TSN)

WHERE & WHEN

The program has been running in the Liverpool Plains region of northern NSW (Tamworth/Gunnedah district) from October 2001 and is expected to continue throughout January 2002. A BIG THANK YOU to those who have been involved so far! In total, 5 surveys have been conducted across areas of private land, Travelling Stock Routes/camps, public reserves, and State Forests within the region. Throughout January 2002, surveys will be conducted every weekend, concentrating early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Volunteers are not required to participate in both days survey, but if you can then that would be greatly appreciated.

Survey 6     5th—6th January

Survey 7     12th-13th January

Survey 8     19th-20th January

Survey 9     26th-27th January

WHAT IS REQUIRED

The fieldwork involves surveying areas of private and/or public lands using the Birds Australia Atlas methods, either 2-hectare/20 minute searches or 500 metre area searches. Volunteers will also be required to complete Atlas Habitat Data sheets. Conditions will more than likely be warm to hot, & volunteers will need to wear appropriate clothing. Some experience with identifying woodland birds likely to occur in the region by oral and visual means would obviously be an advantage. Enthusiasm is essential.

In general, accommodation is up to the preference of each volunteer. Accommodation in the Liverpool Plains region ranges from camping at State Forests, Nature Reserves, stock routes, Caravan Parks etc, to motel/hotel style accommodation at Gunnedah, Tamworth, Curlewis, Quirindi, Werris Creek etc. NRMA accommodation guides may provide further details of suitable accommodation within the region. During some surveys, permission may be given to us to bush camp on the landholders private property. This will depend on the discretion of the landholder, and all volunteers will be notified prior to the surveys of the whether bush camping is allowed on the particular owners land. In such locations, volunteers will be required to bring their own supplies (food, water etc) and dispose of their rubbish thoughtfully. For those volunteers requiring transport, from either a fellow volunteer or the Project Co-ordinator, transport can be arranged.
