Birdline Victoria Update No. 54
For the week ending: 9 December, 2001
There has been no confirmation of the Spotted Whistling-Duck near Phillip
Island, however there is a sighting of a Dollarbird at Cranbourne to keep
people interested. There are lots of other interesting birds around, even
if they're not of the calibre of a Whistling-duck.
There has been some comment about the new non-formatted version of the
Birdline Update which Birding-Aus memebers now recieve. If anyone wants to
get the normal version just email me and I will add you to the list,
although you will then get two versions, the pretty one and the non-pretty
one!
9 December
A Dollarbird was seen at the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens along with White
winged Trillers and a Nankeen Night Heron as well as all the other summer
migrants, thanks Bette Mitchell.
8 December
An Owlet Nightjar was reported from Webb Street in Warrandyte, thanks Greg
Coburn.
8 December
A juvenile Wedge-tailed Eagle was seen flying over the wetlands on
Heatherton Road in Keysborough (?), thanks Greg Coburn.
5 December
Purple-crowned Lorikeets feeding in flowering Gums in the Hungry Jacks car
park on the Hume Highway at Fawkner/Coburg, thanks Bette Mitchell.
5 December
12 Australian Pratincoles were seen west of Pyramid Hill, thanks Simon
Starr.
1 December
A possible sighting of a Spotted Whistling-duck requires confirmation. The
mystery duck was seen at the end of Soldiers Rd (next to the Reef Island
Reserve), near Phillip Island, off the South Gippsland Highway, thanks
Barbara Burns.
Early December
At the waterways in Braeside there have been around 400 Sharp-tailed
Sandpipers, some Red-necked Stints and the odd Curlew Sandpiper, thanks Greg
Coburn.
27 November
A Pale-headed Rosella, presumably an escapee, was calling loudly, and a male
Rufous Songlark was seen and heard calling from various perches. A female
Rufous Songlark was flushed from the tall grasses at the Banyule Flats
Reserve, Heidelberg, thanks Gina Hopkins.
25 November
An albino Magpie was seen at Archibald Drive, Metung, on the Gippsland
Lakes, thanks Brenton Stokes.
24 November
At the You Yangs, near Geelong, 2 Masked Woodswallow, 11 White-browed
Woodswallow and a male White-winged Triller was seen amongst the usual birds
in the Eastern paddock, not far from the Birds Australia Boneseeding plot,
thanks Merrilyn Serong.
24 November
Two Australian Pratincoles have been reported at Pyramid Hill in Northern
Victoria, thanks Chris Coleborn.
