A week or so ago, I put a stone bird bath under a large callistemon right
beside our rear deck. As our bedroom opens onto this deck via french doors
which are left open at all times (while we are home), we have a wonderful
view of the birds from daylight to dark.
The installation of the bird bath coincided with the onset of the hot
weather and has seen a huge increase in birds visiting the tree. In one
period of two hours or so on Tuesday, the following bird species visited the
tree and either drank or bathed from/in the bird bath.
Noisy Miner, Noisy Friarbird, Little Friarbird, Olive-backed Oriole,
Figbird, Laughing Kookaburra, Spotted Turtle-dove, Crested Pigeon, White
Ibis, Torresian Crow, Magpie, Pied Butcherbird, Grey Butcherbird.
As well, the tree was visited by Rainbow and Scaly-breasted Lorikeets.
As a teenager, I wandered around here and often stopped at water holes in
the two creeks that flowed through the immediate area. Now the creeks are
gone with the water being sent through underground pipes. It is much neater
that way and you can build houses on the resumed land - this means more
council rates. It also means that the bandicoots, water rats, etc have all
disappeared too. Now, only rain and bird baths provide the necessary water.
