Little Tern bill tip

To Jill's query re separate species indicated by black tip of bill in breeding plumage.
 
It was suggested that this indicated their age, we have measured a large number of breeding terns in the Botany Bay colony and the measurements have varied from 2mm to 9mm and none age specific.
 
All breeding birds are in their second year before breeding, with only one exception.
