The Werribee Wagtails had an excellent day last Tuesday in the Anakie Gorge.
We entered from Stony Creek where we were greeted by Brown Treecreepers and
White-throated Treecreepers. Melbourne's weather has been very changeable
and it had rained most of Monday night, fortunately it stopped as we arrived
at Stony Creek and all the birds came out to feed and reclaim territory.
It was a very busy place. Honeyeaters, Yellowed Tufted, Whited-eared,
White-naped, Eastern Spinebills, Golden & Rufous Whistlers were all busy.
We believe we saw Swift Parrots feeding in the eucalypt flowers. The Sacred
Kingfisher added colour, and the Olive-backed Oriole the music.
Since I joined 'birding-aus' I have started counting birds and find I have
seen 496 so would like to make it 500 by the end of the year. Can you
imagine my excitement when one of our members, Carol Popham, sighted the
Powerful Owl ! That is 497 & I'm still counting. My cup runneth over! We
continued along Switch road in the hope of seeing the Spotted Quail Thrush
but no luck.
Monday I am going to Salt Works at Laverton hoping to see the Lewin's Rail
and I regularly go to Kirk's Point in the hope of seeing the Grey Plover. A
Barn Owl or even a Fairy Penguin would make 500.
