I have been considering the options for rapid access to bird recordings for a
while, certainly minidisc seems to have some major advantages (with the bonus
that it also allows recording and a long batery life). There seems to be a lot
of discussion around the compression used and loss of infomation from the calls.
the link below provides a good review of a number of web discussions on the
issue ( including evaluation of minidisc versus other recording technologies
using sonograms). It seems that the practical effects are minimal.

the lin is to "A Summary of "Bird Chat" & "NEORN" mail groups Discussion about
                                                    MiniDisc Recording"
I reckon my vote is going to be for minidisk.
