2001 Rufous Scrub-bird Surveys

Volunteers - we need your help!

Why a survey?

From 1999-2000 the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) commissioned Birds Australia to conduct surveys for the Rufous Scrub-bird (Atrichornis rufescens) in north-east NSW. The surveys have been part of a long term (5-year) monitoring program designed to assess the abundance of the species in the World Heritage National Parks of north-eastern NSW.

Following the success of the surveys over the past two years, this seasons surveys are about to commence. Volunteers are required to assist us in the surveys being conducted in the Barrington Tops and Border Ranges National Parks. The surveys are a great opportunity for volunteers to assist in the conservation of this rare and cryptic species in some of the most beautiful World Heritage rainforests of the east coast of NSW. Also a great opportunity to camp out and see some of the rarer rainforest birds, mammals and plants that occur in those regions.

Survey locations?

Barrington Tops and Border Ranges National Parks.

Barrington Tops Survey 1: 24th-25th November, 2001

                            Survey 2: 4th-5th November, 2001

Border Ranges : Survey 1: TBA

                            Survey 2: TBA

Experienced and/or enthusiastic birdwatchers.

Volunteers will be briefed on the background of the project, the survey method, Rufous Scrub-bird calls and behaviour.

Depending on the preference of the volunteer, however, in the past we have camped at the Gloucester River camp site within Barrington Tops National Park and Sheepstation Creek within Border Ranges NP and this year we will do the same.

NSW NPWS will re-imburse volunteers for their petrol and food costs volunteers are required to keep their receipts.
