I followed Richard Nowotny's directions, (October 13th.) and had an
excellent morning on the road to Point Cook Homestead and around Spectacle
Lake. My highlight came later as I was returning to Werribee on Sneyde's
Road. I saw some fluffy black balls running, I stopped and waited, soon a
Buff-Banded Rail appeared, so close binoculars were quite superfluous.
I did not see the Ballion's Crake and that would have been a big tick for
me, but did see most other birds Richard & Lawrie listed. I appreciated
Richard allowing me to use his report in our Werribee Wagtales Newsletter.
An aside, I attended the Victorian Field Naturalists Camp at the Grampians
and was delighted to meet other "Birding-aus" ers.
The Grampians are a fertile ground for bird watchers. I did not keep an
organised list but the Black-tailed Native Hens were in abundance, many
White-necked Herons and Yellow Spoonbills too. I was delighted to see a
couple of White-browed Babblers in the wildflower garden at Pomonal and
saddened to hear the story of the Grey-crowned Babblers which may be down to
two. A Rose Robin is always great to see.
