There is more than one way to skin a cat (an analogy that most on
birding-aus would find favour with ....) and there are lots of ways of doing
this. If you have a Macintosh it will be easier but most computers now have
a microphone input of sorts. You could just play your tapes and record tiny
sound files (OK - they will be tiny in terms of time but probably BIG
files), give them a suitable name, and store them on your hard disk. Mac
users can use the freebie application SoundApp and save them in Play Lists
by family or order (that wasn't an ad).
Some systems will allow you to run a direct line between the tape player and
your sound card. Again, you'll have a lot of files and may want to organise
them under family or order.
A far simpler way is to fork out 60 or 70 dollars and buy one of the CD-ROMs
that has birdsong included. I have a copy of Simpson & Day's guide, which
is really just the book version on a CD, same artwork and text, and little
real interactivity, although you can do some limited searches. But it has
the calls - and that makes it worth having (this isn't an ad either). A
search of the birding-aus archive might let you see comments about some of
the other CD-ROMS available for Aussie birdsong. I should buy another one
some day: they're not expensive, really, and there are a few calls I would
like to hear more of than what S&D offer.
A third way would be to get a friend with a CD burner to record the tapes
onto CD for you.
There may be copyright issues with all of the above methods- I'm not
advocating any sort of infringement, just saying what may be possible. I
think buying a suitable CD-ROM is probably going to be the best all round
solution, however. And no that's still not an ad....
