Hello Syd and birding Aus
What a great story! Such adventures appeal to me too!
I'm not too good in strange cities either. For some reason all the
buildings look the same!
Noting where the sun is works in the tropics if you start off when the
sun is low, or at night note the stars. But cloudy or rainy nights are
more problematic ! At night I leave a fire burning at the campsite ( not
helpful if it's raining!).
I've never suffered a foot injury in the bush and I've chased down
wounded buffalo and pigs, as well as done the usual bushwalking things!
In fact the only serious foot injury I've suffered occurred in town when
I tripped over a paving stone and shattered a couple of metatarsals (I
told four year old Rowan he'd have to sit on the floor of the 4WD and
operate the pedals while I steered - I was joking of course!)
Yet I was still walk a kilometre or so around (although I could only wear
gumboots because my foot was so swollen). A bushwalker with such an
injury might be able to walk out. However leaving the boot on might be a
good idea, as is always carrying a broad bandage.
