I find the easiest way not to get lost (and have successfully used this in Mulga at Gundabooka NP) is to waypoint the car before you head out, and when you want to return, use the GOTO function back to this point. If you want to follow a straight line, you tend to walk through a few bushes, but as long as the country isn't too steep, the system works well. I use a Garmin (not the basic model but also not the most expensive, which allows you to also enter coordinates and use this as a waypoint - good if you want to go somewhere that you haven't been too before), but I am not certain if all models have this feature. I find Waypoint invaluable, particularly when I see Threatened Species while I am driving.
Cheers,
Peter

G'day Vicki et al.

I'm just a beginer with this GPS navigation stuff but my Etrex (the basic yellow
one) will show accurate directions very soon after you start moving.
Experienced folk always recommend carrying a compass as well. I must get one
and learn how to use it - maybe a christmas present hint.

I occasionally walk from the car along a track for a couple of km and then use the GPS to take me back in a straight line through the bush. It's often arduous and scratchy but I've made it back every time and it's more intereastng than
retracing one's steps.

Cheers

Steve
