Hi there Birders,

Many have commented in recent days about the large numbers of Black Tailed Native Hens around in various places at present.

I had a brief visit to Hattah-Kulkyne NP on Monday and there were over 500 BTNH around Lakes Hattah, Bulla and Arawak. Many of them were feeding in the grass sometimes 200 metres from the lakes. We had to be careful not to drive over them as they scuttled across the road as we drove around the Nature Drive.

Lake Hattah was about a metre below capacity while Lake Bulla was very shallow (less than a metre) and Lake Arawak had a few very shallow pools and will probably dry up very soon. We did not check out any other lakes in the park.

Happy birding,

Trevor Hampel
