At about 7.00am, Sat. Sept.28th, 9.6km up the first turnoff left 1.0km
from the entry into Hattah-Kulkyne NP, about 6km east of "Hattah", (a
roadside store), along the Hattah-Robinvale Rd. we saw a pair of Mallee
Emu-wrens in spinifex on top of a small rise about 50 m off to the right ,
among scattered mallee.
What could have been a grasshopper seen out of the corner of an eye
diasappearing into a clump of spinifex turned out to be a female Mallee
Emu-wren whose curiosity brought her and her mate to closer than focussing
distance in response to "air-kissing".
Delicate little mites they were too, with noticably short tails compared
to Rufous-crowned and Southern Emu-wrens.
                                    Cheers
                                         Michael & Penny Hunter
