I saw the Australian Bittern that has been sighted
regularly at Ash Island (near Newcastle) today 1/10/01. I flushed in the
extreme northeast corner of the Swan Pond. It flew from the reeds near the road
near the railway line into the grass on the opposite of the small deep pond.
Other birds of interest were:
Bar shouldered Dove
White Fronted Chat
Waders
Greenshanks
Marsh Sandpiper
Eastern Curlew
and one Red -Necked Stint which tried very hard to
be something more interesting. It is difficult this time of year when the waders
are in transition between breeding and non-breeding plumage.
