Hi All,

I have not mentioned Red Hill on Sydney's northern beaches for some time,
partially as I have not visited it recently and partially because I took a
FOC bird club outing there in August and it was a total disaster, a strong
wind on the day blew all the birds across the Tasman to New Zealand.

Anyway, I went back this morning to see what was happening and sure enough
things are back to normal. I saw 4 or 5 Brush Bronzewings at various
locations, the males are looking great in their new breeding plumage.
Bar-shouldered Doves were calling and again seen at several places. Only 3
Brown Quail however, perhaps the rest are busy nesting. Pheasant Coucals
were calling but not seen. For those who know Red Hill, they were calling
from where the fire trail crosses the saddle at the beginning of Wheeler
Creek and from the gulley which runs west from that point. Dusky
Woodswallows have returned from wherever they go in winter.

The highlights were my first Rufus whistler for the season and a
White-throated Gerygone calling from the west slope of Red Hill, about 2 K.
east of Oxford Falls Rd. where Andy Burton found them last year (and I found
a pair nest building). A new bird for Red Hill and only my third location
for them on the northern beaches.

Bruce.
