Hello birdos,

On the weekend I spent a couple of days looking for Red-lored Whistlers at Round Hill and Nombinnie NR unfortunately without success. I did see some other interesting birds though including Spotted Nightjars (3 spots), Shy Hylacola (5 spots), Southern Scrub-robin (4 spots), Gilbert's Whistler (2 spots), Chestnut Quail-thrush (2 spots), Painted Button-quail (one spot). White-fronted Honeyeater, Yellow-plumed Honeyeater, White-browed and White-breasted Woodswallow, were widespread through both reserves. Rufous Whistlers were abundant and very, very vocal making sound recording of other birds a challenge! The weather was warm, in the low 30's and seemed to have an effect on bird activity.

After leaving the mallee I stopped off at the spot that folks call "chat alley" which is about 17 km north of Lake Cargelligo. Here White-winged Fairy-wrens and Brown Songlarks were calling well in and around the Nitre Goosefoot depression. A pair of White-fronted Chats had dependent young. I also found White-winged Fairy-wrens in a fenced off enclosure of Bladder Saltbush west of Condobolin.

On the way back on Sunday I drove up into the hills north of Rankins Springs into Jimberoo State Forest where I found Grey-fronted Honeyeater and Shy Hylacola in woodland with a Hill Ti-tree understorey. The understorey was similar to where I've found Shys in Cocoparra NP but the overstorey was much thicker and there was no trace of any mallee.

Cheers,

Mick Todd
