Dear all,
The orange leg flags (reported by Alan Morris) are
Victorian waders on their return migration from their breeding
grounds. We can expect to see more orange flagged birds and if
you are lucky birds from other countries in the East Asian-Australasian
Flyway. An orange-flagged Eastern Curlew was seen at the Kurnell Shorebird
Lagoon (previous known by many as Metromix Pond) on 1 September and a
blue-flagged Grey-tailed Tattler from Japan was observed by Brian Speechley on
the rock groins at Kurnell. Waders will continue to trickle through
NSW for another couple of months or so (even up to December for some birds). Any
colour flag sightings should be reported to Clive Minton who will tell
you where to bird is from and add your very important observations to the AWSG
database, helping us to plot migration routes and staging areas across the
world.
Please note neither Clive nor I are able to be on
the birding-aus list server due to already
overloaded incoming email. But please
don't hesitate to send your observations or queries direct or cc.
Happy birding, Phil Straw, Vice Chair,
AWSG
