Birdline Victoria Update
for the week ending 9/10/01 I'm off for a fortnight on holidays, but my wife has kindly agreed to update Birdline while I'm away, so let's keep her busy with loads of sightings. It does mean, however, that she will not be monitoring Birding-Aus during this period so reports will need to come via the sighting form at http://home.iprimus.com.au/scooney/sightings_report.htm and that next week's update will not be published so you'll need to check the website to stay abreast of exciting sightings in Victoria. Thank's for your consideration and I'll be back in a couple of weeks. 3 September Up to 7 Freckled Ducks were seen on Lake Borrie and Lake Borrie South, thanks Tom Fletcher. 2 September A flock of 40 Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos were seen flying over Darebin Park in Fairfield. 2 September 2 Swift Parrots were seen flying over Cameron Close in Geelong Grammar School (at Corio, northern outskirts of Geelong), thanks Russell Woodford. 1 September A Pair of Gang Gang Cockatoos were being chased by Currawongs at Oban Road Donvale (near Smedley Road), thanks Lynda Chambers. 31 August The male Northern Shoveler was seen at Werribee Sewage Farm from Paradise Road on Lake Borrie, thanks Maarten Hulzebosch. 30 August 3 nestling Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters at Newstead in central Victoria, thanks John Alexander. 24 August A Black Kite was seen at the Werribee Sewage Plant, in the north west corner of the complex near the corner of Flume and Hill Roads, thanks Paul McDonald. 22 August A Black-tailed Native-Hen was seen at the Brighton Golf Course. It could be seen from the corner of Were and Creswick Streets, thanks Michael Norris. 18 August 2 Crested Pigeon chicks were reported from a nest in Newstead, along with a Black-shouldered Kite, bird number 79 on the Alexander's block, thanks John Alexander. 16 August 3 Common Terns were seen at the rocks at Ricketts Point in Beaumaris, along with a female Musk Duck in the bay beyond the rocks, thanks Alex Farias. 13 August An Osprey was reported in pines at the end of Cliff Road in Shoreham on Monday and Tuesday by Malcolm Legg and Brent Hall, this would be only the 23rd sighting for Victoria, and only the second close to Melbourne, thanks Mike Carter and Martin O'Brien for the sighting records. 12 August A juvenile northern form of a Royal Albatross was seen off Port Fairy on a pelagic trip, thanks Mike Carter. 12 August 3 Freckled Ducks were seen from the bird-hide at the Edithvale Wetlands, thanks Joy Knight. Birdline Victoria is a service for birdwatchers to report and find out about rare and unusual birds in Victoria and is brought to you by the VicGroup of Birds Australia. Birdline can be contacted on (03) 9882 2390 or on the Internet at http://home.iprimus.com.au/scooney/index.htm Regards, Stuart This update was sent to you on request or via the Birding-Aus mailing list.
