This time last year
I was grumping loudly
at the Bushfire Brigade
backburning behind our house.

Didn't they know
we had Barking Owls?

Not a sound after that.
Don't blame them really
for pushing off.
All that noise, smoke
and orange suits

Never heard them again.

Until last night.

Sitting by the fire playing cards,
drinking one too many bottles of wine
and waiting for my birthday dinner to cook

we heard the unmistakable ruckus
that only an Owl can cause
in our street.

The dogs go ballistic,
the chickens are in a flap
and the neighbours are out with torches
checking for boat people

we drink a toast to the Barking Owl

happy birthday me

many happy returns
