Back c 1970, the only RWB population was at Botanic Gardens in a bamboo
clump near the Herbarium - I once glimpsed some tailfeathers on a BOCA
Beginners Outing. That population is long gone.
I have seen them very occasionally over last 10 years at Wilson Reserve
(where I've birdwatched for 30 years), in the carpark and drive area off
the Boulevard. One was a young bird with its parent, which fed it - I
think that counts as a breeding record. Locals say one or two pairs have
bred in backyards in Gilbert St and thereabouts.
If you know the distinctive call, you might be lucky. They may lurk
along the cliffside between the Reserve and Gilbert St, below the
Boulevard - very rough and weed-infested going, with degraded swamp at
bottom, so I should walk along the verge of the Boulevard to check.
Don't get run over!
A friend some 10 or 15 years ago saw one in a Northcote backyard. It may
have been an escapee as it was hanging round near resident's cage-birds.
